Also, I was able to acquire a Maxi Scooter Clutch Holding Tool, and was curious as to whether or not it would work to hold the variator as well.

The belt isn't supposed to fit "nicely" over the variator and clutch.. regular socket w/o success. the shaft slips. you can get a special tool to hold.
I Love Scooters. usually i use a 12v car wheel nuts opener to open the variator bolt.if i am. i don't think they use a holding tool at the garage.

You can keep the shaft from rotating with a variator holding tool or by using a light duty. If you are just changing weights and have no plans to remove the clutch.
